Brits Olympisch comité kritisch op prijzengeld voor atletiekkampioenen

De baas van het Britse olympische comité is niet te spreken over de financiële beloning voor olympisch kampioenen atletiek vanaf de komende Spelen. Volgens Andy Anson verhoogt de stap onnodig de druk op bonden van andere sporten om met prijzengeld te komen. Ook gaat het in tegen de olympische gedachte, aldus Anson.
“De kracht van de olympische familie is dat sporttakken samenwerken. Zo moet je dit soort zaken aanpakken. Het is ongepast en onhandig om dit als individuele sport aan te kondigen”, zei Anson tegen Sky Sports.
Topsportdirecteur André Cats van sportkoepel NOC*NSF was dinsdag juist positief over de primeur van atletiekbond World Athletics, die 50.000 dollar uitreikt aan iedere olympisch kampioen in de sport. “Een verrassende keuze van World Athletics, maar een te prijzen initiatief en een goede ontwikkeling. Ik vind dat het Internationaal Olympisch Comité het initiatief moet nemen om prijzengeld in alle sporten uit te keren”, zei Cats.
